I recently received an email from a client asking if it is allowable to remove a pressure vessel nameplate and position it in another location on that same vessel. Here is the response that I gave:

Dear John,

Unfortunately, ASME National Board does not allow nameplates to be removed unless approved by an inspector and an updated Data Report is prepared.

2013 National Board Inspection Code Sect 5.11 requires the following:

if it becomes necessary to remove original stamping, the Inspector shall, subject to the approval of the Jurisdiction, witness making of a facsimile of stamping, the obliteration of old stamping, and transfer of stamping to the new item. When stamping is on a nameplate, the Inspector shall witness transfer of nameplate to the new location. Any relocation shall be described on the applicable NBIC “R” Form. The re-stamping or replacement of a code symbol stamp shall be performed only as permitted by the governing code of construction.”

In light of the above-mentioned requirement, I recommend that you request the “R” form (updated Data Report) from the contractor who performed the removal.
